Yankees' Bad Luck Continues: Youkilis Possibly Out for Season

Kevin Youkilis back on the DL and will need back surgery for herniated disc. Out presumably for 10-12 weeks according to columnist Johnette Howard for ESPN.com and ESPNNewYork.com.

With Youkilis out, Cashman said there are more opportunities for David Adams at 3B. In 75 at bats this season, Adams is only hitting .213 with a couple home runs and 7 RBI's. It's also being said the expectation is Alex Rodriguez will return.

MLB Injury Express: Aaron Hill, Brandon Beachy, Anibal Sanchez

Aaron Hill (2B, Arizona Diamondbacks)
Status: on rehab assignment now, potential return during weekend series vs Cincinnati Reds
Outlook: Hill started a rehab assignment with Triple-A Reno over the weekend in the final stage of his recovery from a broken hand. Reno have an off-day today, then Hill is due to play a couple more games before potentially returning to the majors. The Diamondbacks have an off-day on Thursday so their schedule is lined up nicely for Hill to get another day off before returning to the big leagues on Friday. His quote after the first game over the weekend suggested that his ability to play is really an issue of pain management right now, and his three hits over nine at-bats so far indicates that he's still able to swing the bat properly without too much trouble.
Losing time: Willie Bloomquist, and to a lesser extent Cliff Pennington and Didi Gregorius. The arrival of Gregorius was necessitated by injuries to Hill and Bloomquist and the 23-year-old shortstop has hit well during his first proper stint in the big leagues, hitting .298/.366/.450 in 193 PA, although he has cooled off considerably in June with just two extra-base hits. Provided Hill is healthy, he should play second more or less full-time, but it remains to be seen whether Pennington & Gregorius will split time at short or if the Diamondbacks would favour one heavily over the other. If Hill needs semi-regular rest, Pennington would likely get the extra time at second. Bloomquist may be sent back to the minors, with no room for him anywhere in the infield.

Right-handed pitcher Adam Warren has been recalled.

On Monday, general manager Brian Cashman said that he was leaning toward placing the slugger back on the disabled list.

Phillies' Chase Utley nearing rehab assignment

Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Chase Utley is nearing the start of his minor league rehab assignment, which should begin by tomorrow, according to Stephen Pianovich of MLB.com.

While Utley doesn't want to rush himself back, he was able to take swings in the batting cage toward the end of the Phillies' batting practice session yesterday. He's not sure how long his rehab assignment will be, as the way his injured right oblique responds to increased activity will determine his return timeframe.

Boston's Clay Buchholz could head to DL

Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell had fully intended to use right-hander Clay Buchholz in Tuesday's double-header with the division rival Tampa Bay Rays should the lingering soreness in Buchholz's neck subside. Buchholz has been scratched from his start, but NBC Sports.com's Craig Calcaterra reports that the right-hander will throw on the side instead.

Buchholz still has nick soreness, but he will throw a bullpen session. How he feels afterward will determine if he will make or miss his next start -- or possibly head to the disabled list. MLB.com's Todd Kaprovich reports that Alfredo Aceves will come up from Triple-A Pawtucket to take Buchholz's start on Tuesday.

Braves place Evan Gattis on DL with oblique strain

The Atlanta Braves have placed Evan Gattis on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right oblique, according to Mark Bowman of MLB.com. To replace Gattis on the roster, the Braves recalled infielder Tyler Pastornicky from Triple-A.

Gattis was the Braves' catcher for last night's rain-delayed contest against the New York Mets. His injury wasn't revealed until this morning when the roster move was made.

Indians' Nick Swisher likely out until Friday

Cleveland Indians first baseman Nick Swisher has missed his team's last two games with shoulder soreness, and he could likely stay out of the lineup for a few more days. MLB.com's Mark Emery reports that Swisher  had his shoulder examined on Sunday, June 16. The examination revealed inflammation but no structural damage.

Swisher took a cortisone shot on Monday. Even though manager Terry Francona does not believe that Swisher needs the disabled list, the possibility exists. That will happen only if Swisher does not respond to the cortisone. Francona expects that Swisher will play on Friday, June 21, possibly before then. Said Fancona,

"We'll go all on him, on his symptoms. It's all dependent on how he feels. If he feels better and the medical staff OKs him, we'll play him before that."

Yankees' Mark Teixeira: Another DL stint possible

It is starting to look more likely that New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira will will find himself on the disabled list once again. MLB.com's Bryan Hoch reports that Teixeira took a cortisone shot on Monday, June 16, and the shot alone will keep him out of the lineup for at least seven days.

Teixeira left last Saturday's game because he had trouble swinging the bat. He flew back to New York on Sunday, and an MRI revealed inflammation in the same wrist that sidelined him for the season's first two months. At that point, neither he nor the Yankees knew whether or not he would need another DL stint. Now, Hoch has learned that the disabled list is more likely.
