Cubs trade Carlos Marmol to Dodgers

Yesterday I wrote that the Dodgers and Cubs were close to a deal involving Carlos Marmol. Today, it is complete. The Dodgers have acquired Carlos Marmol from the Cubs for Matt Guerrier, according to Jon Morosi of Fox Sports.

The deal appeared imminent yesterday as the two sides were talking, but something must have delayed it. Now, the deal is done and the Dodgers have Carlos Marmol. A report yesterday from Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times suggested that the Cubs will eat $245,000 of Marmol's remaining $4.9 million contract.

The Dodgers now appear to have good depth in the bullpen with Marmol, Brandon League, Kenley Jansen and J.P. Howell, to name a few. Marmol adds a different dimension to the Dodgers bullpen with the ability to throw a slider that will make you look silly. While Marmol may have that slider, he has been the definition of inconsistent. He has had one bad outing, followed by a couple good ones, then followed by a bad outing. The Dodgers are taking a chance on Marmol, but if he returns to his old form, the Dodgers got a steal.

While Marmol was a risk, it was a move that the Dodgers needed to make. Their bullpen has been shaky and they needed another arm down there. Even with this move, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Dodgers try to add another bullpen arm. On the year, Marmol has gone 2-4 with a 5.86 ERA and a 32-21 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Guerrier this year has gone 0-3 with a 4.80 ERA and a 21/12 strikeout to walk ratio. It will be interesting to watch Marmol with the Dodgers. It could turn out to be a really smart move or a move that may result in Marmol trying to find another job.
