Cubs Rumors: Three teams have 'checked in' on Jeff Samardzija

Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reported earlier today that the Cubs would listen to teams' offers for starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija. Teams have already checked in with the Cubs about the right-hander, according to a report.

The Diamondbacks, Pirates, Red Sox and other unknown teams have 'checked in' on Cubs pitcher Jeff Samardzija, according to a report from Tom Loxas of Cubs Den. The Cubs prefer to keep Samardzija and sign him long term, rather than trading him, as MLB Injury News' Jeremy Cannon said.

Both the Diamondbacks and Pirates are trying to acquire a front-of-the-line type of pitcher and Samardzija definitely fits the bill. Samardzija is an athlete, as he was a wide receiver for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in college. He had to choose between playing football and baseball and he obviously chose football which turned out to be a wise decision.

Samardzija has the potential to be a very good pitcher in this league. Heck, he already is a good pitcher. A deal to get Samardzija would likely cost the team acquiring him a lot of future assets. On the year, Samardzija is 6-9 with a 3.94 ERA and a 139/52 strikeout-to-walk ratio. At the age of 28, Samardzija has a chance to be a very good pitcher in this league for a long time. It isn't surprising why teams are interested in him. He's young, he's under team control for a couple more years and he has room to grow. It isn't likely that a deal goes down, as the team acquiring him would need to give up a lot, but it is definitely not out of the question.
