Giants put Joaquin Arias on DL after appendectomy, recall Nick Noonan

July is not going any better than June for the San Francisco Giants. Alex Pavlovic of the San Jose Mercury News tweeted Monday that infielder Joaquin Arias had been placed on the DL after undergoing an appendectomy on Sunday night. Nick Noonan has been called up from the minors to take his place.

Arias mostly makes appearances off the bench for the Giants, with the occasional start at first, third or shortstop, but the move leaves the Giants very short on depth. Their bench now consists of two catchers, Guillermo Quiroz and Hector Sanchez, infielders Noonan and Tony Abreu, and outfielder Cole Gillespie. None of them have accumulated a full season of at-bats and Abreu's career batting average of .259 is the highest of the group.
