Rangers rumors: Texas 'really wants' Cubs' Matt Garza

The Rangers are in need of pitching and appear to be going after the biggest available fish in the sea. They want to win and they want to win now.

According to Sports anchor/reporter George Ofman, the Rangers "really want" Cubs starting pitcher Matt Garza.

If the Rangers did want to acquire Garza, they would have to part with one of their top prospects. The Cubs won't give Garza up for cheap. He is a big name pitcher, who can be the ace or No. 2 guy in the rotation. Ofman said that if Garza pitches well today, that to not be surprised if he is traded by this weekend. There may be competition for Garza, though. According to Carrie Muskat of Cubs.com, the Nationals, Dodgers, Orioles, Blue Jays and Phillies have scouts at Garza's start today. The Rangers will have to outbid all of those teams in order to get to Garza.

If Garza did get traded to the Rangers, he would help their rotation right away. He is a capable pitcher, but  he has battled injuries throughout his career. If he can stay healthy, he can be a top-10 pitcher in this game.

On the short season, Garza is 2-1 with a 4.25 ERA and a 37/14 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Any team in need of pitching should be in on Garza. The things that will keep teams away from him are injury history, inconsistency and the price. If he can prove to be consistent and stay healthy, watch out. If the Cubs ask for too much, expect him to stay with the Cubs again. Odds are that he gets dealt soon.

One Response to Rangers rumors: Texas 'really wants' Cubs' Matt Garza

  1. Mitch Williams said as t the start of the season that the Cubs should insist on 3B Mike Olt as part of Garza or even Soriano deal with the Rangers. I would not mind that at all if the Cubs do trade Garza.
