Cubs rumors: Carlos Marmol told to expect trade

Chicago Cubs closer Carlos Marmol isn’t likely to be traded before the start of the regular season. However, the team has told Marmol’s agent to expect a deal at some point this season, according to Gordon Wittenmyer of The Chicago Sun-Times.

Chicago is expected to trade Marmol once he regains trade value this season and closer-in-waiting Kyuji Fujikawa establishes himself in the big leagues, according to Wittenmyer.

Marmol is making $9.8 million in the final year of his contract. He owns limited no-trade rights, but he’s provided the Cubs with several teams he’d be willing to join.

Marmol was an All-Star reliever in 2008 and maintained a 2.55 ERA while collecting 38 saves in 2010. However, he struggled with command last season, walking 7.3 batters per nine innings. Chicago is hoping he can get off to a quick start in order for his trade value to be increased. They will then be able to flip him in order to help expedite their rebuilding process.

  2. Marmol's stats after mid-May last year were sick. For about a four month time frame, his ERA was sub-0.50 (mid-May thru mid-Sept). Real baseball fans know he has value, especially as a set-up man.

  3. The Cubs are hoping he can carry that second-half tear over to start the 2013 season so they can flip him for something of value.
