Minnesota Twins first baseman/designated hitter Justin
Morneau told reporters, including Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com, that he hasn’t
been approached by the team about a contract extension.
Morneau added that he doesn’t want negotiations to be a
distraction during the regular season. His representation also hasn’t
approached the Twins about a long-term extension at this point, as the veteran
slugger wants to let things play out, according to Bollinger.
At one point, it looked like Morneau and fellow slugger Joe
Mauer would make up the middle of Minnesota’s order for years to come. However,
injuries have limited Morneau over the past several seasons. This along with
his previously high levels of production – Morneau was AL MVP in 2006 – make negotiations
all the more difficult.
Morneau showed some flashes of his former self last season,
hitting .267/.333/.440 with 26 doubles and 19 home runs over 570 plate
appearances. Still, it appears that both sides will wait out the upcoming year
before resuming negotiations. Morneau is set to enter the final season of his
current contract which will pay him $14 million in 2013.
