The Boston Red Sox have been one of the many teams tied to
free agent Kyle Lohse, but it’s “highly unlikely” the right-hander reaches an
agreement with the team, according to Rob Bradford of WEEI.com.
According to a major league source, however, it is “highly unlikely” the Red Sox will be locking up the top free agent pitcher still on the market.
Bradford notes that the Red Sox did have some interest in
Lohse earlier this offseason, but that was before the club signed Ryan
Dempster. While Lohse’s strike-throwing abilities are a skill set Boston
covets, the Red Sox remain hesitant to surrender a first-round draft pick in
order to sign the veteran.
The Red Sox current crop of starters, including Jon Lester,
Clay Buchholz, John Lackey, Felix Doubront, Franklin Morales and Dempster,
along with their young arms, such as Allen Webster, Rubby De La Rosa, Matt
Barnes and Henry Owens, make Lohse more of a luxury than a necessity at this
point.
