The Tampa Bay Rays recently signed several veterans to just
about fill out their roster, including Kyle Farnsworth, Kelly Johnson and Luke
Scott. However, Marc Topkin of The Tampa Bay Times notes that the Rays still
seem to be in need of a right-handed-hitting player that can man the outfield,
first base and designated hitter.
There still seems to be a need for a right-handed hitting DH/1B/OF, though with limited options.
The New York Yankees are seeking a similar player, and I
looked earlier this morning at how the remaining options are limited. Topkin
mentions Carlos Lee and Russ Canzler, who was recently designated for assignment
to make room on the Yankees’ roster for Travis Hafner, as potential fits for
Tampa Bay.
Due to the lack of options remaining on the free agent
market, Topkin believes the Rays could ultimately wait until later into spring
training to acquire a player that may be at risk of being cut by their current
club.
