The Texas Rangers have a void at the back of their starting
rotation entering the season, but they are still not interested in free agent
Kyle Lohse, according to T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com.
Sullivan notes that the Rangers have not changed their
stance on Lohse, and at this time it doesn’t appear they will pursue the
34-year-old.
Texas is poised to enter the season with a starting rotation
that consists of Yu Darvish, Matt Harrison, Derek Holland and Alexi Ogando. The
Rangers currently have several young arms, including Martin Perez, which are
expected to compete for the No. 5 spot. While Lohse would be more of a sure bet
than an untested commodity such as Perez, it seems like Texas is content
letting the young starters battle it out rather than spend on a veteran free
agent.
The Rangers do have the financial flexibility to sign Lohse,
according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, after missing out on several offseason targets,
including Josh Hamilton and Zack Greinke. However, Heyman adds that Texas isn’t
desperate to acquire a starting pitcher at this time.
