The New York Mets remain “hopeful” of signing free agent
Michael Bourn, but there are currently “no discussions” between the union and
the league about the team’s draft pick concerns, according to Andy Martino of
The New York Daily News.
If the Mets sign Bourn, they would currently be required to
send their first-round draft pick to the Atlanta Braves as compensation.
However, New York is attempting to have their No. 11 overall pick protected so
that they would instead have to surrender their second-round selection if an
agreement with Bourn is reached.
The Mets were the 10th-worst teams in MLB last
season, but because the Pittsburgh Pirates were unable to sign a draft pick
last season, they were given a top-10 compensation selection. This bumped the
Mets to pick 11, and technically the top-10 selections are the only ones
protected by MLB.
Regardless, the Mets aren’t expected to pursue a ruling on
their No. 11 pick until after they reach an agreement with Bourn.
