The New York Mets have been tied to free agent Michael Bourn
throughout the offseason, but they continue to be considered a longshot to sign the center fielder. Still, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com feels general manager

Though pitchers and catchers are getting ready to report, Bourn’s
market is continuing to materialize. Multiple teams continue to be tied to the
center fielder, and the Mets are right in the middle of most Bourn rumors.
Still, New York doesn’t appear comfortable meeting Bourn’s
asking price of a five year contract. Instead, the Mets would rather ink him to
a three year commitment, and they aren’t sure anyone is willing to offer the
center fielder more than $40 million.
Bourn and agent Scott Boras may be willing to accept a
short-term contract if it includes a clause that allows them to hit the free
agent market once again next offseason.
Beyond the contract, the Mets are also concerned about
surrendering their first-round pick in order to sign Bourn. While New York
could ultimately land the top remaining free agent, Alderson also admitted that
what you see right now may well be what you get in terms of the Mets’ roster.
