While they continue to be matched in a game of chicken with agent Scott Boras, the New York Mets are “hopeful” of their chances to sign
free agent center fielder Michael Bourn, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

Boras continues to claim that Bourn has received “attractive
offers” from other clubs, and the Mets are basically challenging the
super-agent to prove these statements, says Joel Sherman of The New York Post.
Entering the offseason, the Mets weren’t an expected
contender for Bourn’s services. But, after the Philadelphia Phillies acquired
Ben Revere and the Braves signed B.J. Upton, Bourn’s market has evaporated to
the point where New York is viewed as a legitimate landing spot.
At this point, Sherman says the Mets can continue sticking
with their three-year offer with a willingness to extend it to four guaranteed
years if need be until Boras proves Bourn’s received better. New York doesn’t
want to bid against itself, and since Bourn isn’t a necessity, they could be
happy waiting it out to see if he falls into their lap.
