The Seattle Mariners designated Mike Carp for assignment
recently, and the Boston Red Sox could be interested in acquiring the
outfielder/first baseman, according to Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe.
Carp was designated for assignment by the Mariners to make
room on their roster for left-hander Joe Saunders.
Carp showed promise in 2011, hitting .276/.326/.466 with 17
doubles and 12 home runs over 313 plate appearances for the Mariners. However,
the 26-year-old struggled to a .213/.312/.341 batting line last season and
doesn’t have a defined role with Seattle.
The Red Sox have been targeting a left-handed bat that is
able to man first base and the outfield in order to spell Mike Napoli and Jonny
Gomes, who both hit from the right side of the plate. Boston had been tied to
Carp earlier this offseason, and the team is apparently considering pursuing
him now.
Carp has the ability to man both first base and the
outfield. He’s hit .255/.327/.413 over parts of four seasons in the majors.
While he’s primarily been used against right-handed pitchers over his career,
he has actually hit better (.300/.341/.462) in limited opportunities versus
southpaws.
