Kyle Lohse rumors: Brewers, Rangers favorites to sign free agent?

While he admits that no one in baseball knows where free agent Kyle Lohse will end up signing this winter, ESPN’s Jim Bowden believes the Milwaukee Brewers and Texas Rangers are the favorites to sign the right-hander.

Lohse’s agent, Scott Boras, hasn’t held discussions with Brewers general manager Doug Melvin about his client. However, he has reached out to team owner Mark Attanasio – AKA the man with the checkbook –  in an attempt to persuade him to step up and acquire the right-hander.

Bowden points out that the Brewers extended a two-year offer to veteran right-hander Ryan Dempster before he signed with the Boston Red Sox this offseason. Due to their need beyond Yovani Gallardo, Bowden considers Milwaukee a player for Lohse.

The Rangers have been tied to nearly every player available this offseason, including Josh Hamilton, Zack Greinke, Michael Bourn, Nick Swisher, James Shields and Josh Johnson, so why should Lohse be any different?

Texas’ rotation is already solid in Bowden’s opinion, as it includes Yu Darvish, Derek Holland and Matt Harrison. But there is a question mark with Martin Perez projected to occupy the No. 5 spot, and Bowden says signing Lohse would allow Texas to develop its young pitchers rather than rush them to the majors.
