Following the Cleveland Indians signing of free agent
Michael Bourn, Drew Stubbs is likely the odd man out, according to Jon Heyman,
who says the outfielder is “eminently available.”
With the signing of Bourn, the Indians are left with four
candidates for the outfield, also considering Stubbs, Nick Swisher and Michael
Brantley. There are several options for Cleveland at this point.
They could trade Stubbs. There are few outfield options
remaining available, and teams with a need – specifically the New York Mets –
would likely be interested.
They could retain Stubbs and platoon him with Brantley. In
this case they could fill out the remainder of their outfield with Swisher and
Bourn.
They could also retain Stubbs and keep him in the outfield.
This would give the Indians an outfield consisting of Stubbs, Bourn and
Brantley, allowing the team to move Swisher to first base and make Mark
Reynolds a regular designated hitter.
The Indians acquired Stubbs earlier this offseason from the Cincinnati Reds in the trade that also involved Shin-Soo Choo and Trevor Bauer.
The 28-year-old has hit .241/.312/.386 over four seasons in the majors.
