Heyman adds that if Matsuzaka makes the team, he has an opportunity to earn $4 million in 2013 through incentives. He’ll earn $1.5 million by simply passing his physical and making the team, according to Paul Hoynes of The Plain Dealer.

Matsuzaka has spent the past six seasons with the Boston Red Sox. Since his strong 2008 campaign (18-3, 2.90), which garnered Cy Young Award consideration, Matsuzaka has struggled. Over the past four seasons he’s only mustered an ERA of 5.53 with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 1.73. Last season for the Red Sox, the 32-year-old posted an 8.28 ERA over 11 starts.

Cleveland is hoping the low-risk move pays off and Matsuzaka can return to his past form as he is reunited with his former manager Terry Francona.
