There have been reports of negotiations between the St.
Louis Cardinals and right-hander Adam Wainwright involving a long-term contract
extension. While general manager John Mozeliak was willing to acknowledge these
discussions, he told reporters, including Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com, that a
contract extension with Wainwright is not close at this time.
Mozeliak did say that be believes both sides involved have “a
similar goal.” He also did not shut the door on an agreement being reached, as
he will continue to “work towards it.”
The Cardinals and Wainwright have expressed interest in a
multi-year pact. While some other players have set deadlines on negotiations,
it doesn’t appear that Wainwright is averse to negotiations carrying on into
the regular season.
Wainwright is entering the final year of his current contract,
during which he’ll earn $12 million. He returned from a significant arm injury
that caused him to miss the 2011 season to maintain an ERA of 3.94 with a
strikeout-to-walk ratio of 3.54 over 32 starts last year. The 31-year-old owns
a career ERA of 3.15 and maintained a mark of 2.53 over 67 starts during the
2009-10 seasons.
