Following injuries to Corey Hart and Mat Gamel, the
Milwaukee Brewers are in need of a first baseman. Rather than look to trade or
free agency to fill the void, the club will examine their internal options,
according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
Rosenthal notes that the Brewers’ internal options include
Taylor Green, Hunter Morris and Alex Gonzalez. Green started a few games at first
for Milwaukee last season, while Gonzalez has been a shortstop for his 14
seasons in the majors.
If these options prove unappealing, Rosenthal says Milwaukee
could then turn its attention to trade and attempt to acquire a first baseman
on a minor league contract. A pair of former Brewers, Lyle Overbay and Travis
Ishikawa, have signed minor league deals with the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore
Orioles, while the New York Yankees’ Juan Rivera could be another potential
fit.
As far as free agency goes, veterans Aubrey Huff and Carlos Lee
remain available. Mike Carp, who was recently designated by the Seattle
Mariners, has also been tied to Milwaukee, but Rosenthal says the club isn’t
interested in the first baseman/outfielder.
