Yankees Rumors: NY Unlikely to Pursue Justin Upton

The New York Yankees continue to be in the market for a right-handed-hitting outfielder, but they haven’t picked up their pursuit of Arizona Diamondbacks’ Justin Upton and aren’t expected to land the young slugger, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports.

The Yankees indeed want to add a right-handed hitter but haven’t picked up their pursuit of Upton in the days since he was nearly dealt to Seattle, according to major-league sources.

Morosi notes that while the Yankees have a full corps of starting outfielders, including Brett Gardner, Curtis Granderson and Ichiro Suzuki, New York could make room for Upton by trading Granderson, who’s set to hit the free agent market after the 2013 season. The Yankees could flip Granderson for prospects which they could use to acquire Upton.

However, Morosi doesn’t expect this to happen with New York keeping a close eye on their current and future payroll. Instead, he believes the club will end up with a reasonably-priced acquisition like free agent Scott Hairston.
