Yankees Rumors: NY Not Pursuing Catcher, Reliever

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told reporters, including Anthony Rieber of Newsday, that he’s not currently targeting a catcher or bullpen help at this point in the offseason.

"Our catchers are here on the roster," Cashman said. "It was either Russell Martin or we're going from within."
"I cannot talk about players on the free-agent market," Cashman said. "But I am not looking for bullpen help, I can tell you that."

Entering the offseason, the Yankees were expected to re-sign veteran catcher Russell Martin. However, the backstop instead signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates, and Cashman says he’ll stick in-house to fill the void. That means that one of Francisco Cervelli, Chris Stewart, Austin Romine and Bobby Wilson will replace Martin as the team’s starter behind the plate.

Cashman is also apparently content with the makeup of his team’s bullpen. Rafael Soriano, the Yankees’ closer last season in place of the injured Mariano Rivera, remains a free agent, but a return to New York continues to appear unlikely.
