Minnesota Twins first baseman Justin Morneau is in the final
year of his contract, and Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe wonders if the club
would be interested in trading him if they’re able to get “a nice group of
young players in return.”
Cafardo believes a trio of American League East club,
including the Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Rays could be
interested in acquiring Morneau from the Twins as a source of first base help.
Morneau has struggled to remain healthy over the last
several seasons. The slugger was limited to 81 and 69 games in 2010 and 2011,
but he was able to suit up for 134 games last year. Over 505 at-bats for the
Twins, the 31-year-old hit .267/.333/.440 with 26 doubles and 19 home runs.
Morneau is set to make $14 million in 2013. While he’s been
a productive player in the past, it’s unclear if teams would be willing to
surrender the return required for the Twins to be motivated to move him this
offseason.
