The Texas Rangers, Pittsburgh Pirates and San Diego Padres are among the teams pursuing free-agent starter Shaun Marcum, according to major-league sources.
The Rangers and Padres have been tied to starting pitching
throughout the offseason. The Pirates have also expressed interest in starters,
including Detroit Tigers right-hander Rick Porcello, but they re-signed Jeff
Karstens last night. This figures to impact their interest in Marcum.
Pittsburgh is also continuing negotiations with free agent right-hander
Francisco Liriano.
Marcum posted an ERA and WHIP of 3.70 and 1.266 with 7.9
strikeouts and 3.0 walks per nine innings over 21 starts for the Milwaukee
Brewers last season. The 31-year-old has maintained a 3.76 ERA and 1.224 WHIP
in seven seasons at the major league level.
