The Colorado Rockies recently signed Chris Volstad and
Miguel Batista, but they continue to “aggressively pursue” free agents Carl
Pavano and Derek Lowe, according to Troy Renck of The Denver Post.
Even with Volstad in the fold, the Rockies are aggressively pursuing free agents Carl Pa- vano, a right-hander they have tried to acquire numerous times over the last few seasons, and Derek Lowe, a sinkerballer who has pitched well at Coors Field.
Renck adds that the Rockies would like to finalize a deal
with another veteran starter this week.
Colorado’s starting pitching was among the worst in the
majors last season. Beyond their offseason acquisitions, also including veteran
Jeff Francis, the Rockies will count on several in-house arms such as Jorge De
La Rosa, Jhoulys Chacin and Juan Nicasio.
The Rockies also made runs at Kevin Correia (Minnesota
Twins), Kyle McClellan (Texas Rangers) and Aaron Cook (Philadelphia Phillies)
before they signed elsewhere this winter.
