While the Boston Red Sox were tied to free agent Bobby Abreu
yesterday, the club is unlikely to sign the veteran this winter, according to
Scott Lauber of The Boston Herald.
Although the Red Sox dispatched scouts to Venezuela last week to observe Bobby Abreu's workout, it's unlikely the club will sign the veteran outfielder.
The trip, while confirmed today by a major league source, also was labeled somewhat dismissively as "background work" and "nothing more than a scouting assignment."
It was initially thought that the Red Sox were eyeing Abreu
as a possible left-handed-hitting platoon option to pair with Jonny Gomes, who
hits from the right side. However, Abreu didn’t post strong numbers last season
in his time with the Los Angeles Angels and Dodgers, and the Red Sox were
simply doing “background work” on the 39-year-old, a source told Lauber.
While the Red Sox have not ruled out the addition of another
outfielder to match with Gomes, the team has said that it’s comfortable
entering the 2013 season with Ryan Kalish or Daniel Nava splitting time.
