Red Sox Rumors: Boston Interested in Casey Kotchman, Lyle Overbay

The Boston Red Sox have shown interest in free agent first basemen Casey Kotchman and Lyle Overbay, but “nothing is active” regarding the team’s pursuit of either player, according to Rob Bradford of WEEI.com.

According to multiple baseball sources, the Red Sox have shown interest in free agent first basemen Casey Kotchman and Lyle Overbay. One source reported, however, that “nothing is active” in regard to the team’s pursuit of the players.

The Red Sox continue negotiations with free agent Mike Napoli, who was expected to become the team’s regular first baseman when a three-year agreement was announced in early December. The deal hasn’t been finalized, as concern’s arose following the free agent’s physical.

However, Bradford notes that Kotchman and Overbay may not be viewed merely as fallbacks for Napoli. The Red Sox are looking for depth at first base, and they have also reportedly been seeking a solid defensive backup considering the questions surrounding Napoli’s glove at the position.

For this reason, one of Kotchman or Overbay could be added in addition to Napoli. Boston has also been tied to free agent first baseman/designated hitter Nick Johnson.
