Red Sox Rumors: Boston Eyeing Other First Base Options

With their agreement with free agent Mike Napoli still in limbo, the Boston Red Sox continue to look into alternative first base options, including free agents Nick Johnson and Casey Kotchman and Seattle Mariners’ Justin Smoak, according to Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe.

They will add Napoli and probably one more hitter who can play first base and the outfield. That’s why they worked out Bobby Abreu and have explored guys like Nick Johnson and Casey Kotchman.

Cafardo believes, even if the Red Sox land Napoli, they will target another first baseman/outfielder-type player. He says they’ve explored Johnson and Kotchman, and he also notes that the teams have checked in on Smoak.

While Napoli has shown that he’s capable at the plate, there remain questions surrounding his defensive abilities at first base. For this reason, the Red Sox could go out and sign a veteran such as Johnson or Kotchman who are known for their solid gloves at first.
