Even after signing free agents Luke Scott and Kyle
Farnsworth last week, the Tampa Bay Ray are still “on the lookout for help,”
according to Marc Topkin of The Tampa Bay Times. Topkin notes that the Rays are
likely to be seeking another bat and/or bullpen arm.
It would appear that Tampa Bay could use a right-handed
hitter to help spell several of their lefties, including Scott at designated
hitter, James Loney at first base and Matt Joyce in the outfield. The Rays have
several in-house options that could potentially do so, including Sean
Rodriguez, Brandon Buyer and the recently signed Shelley Duncan.
Beyond a bat, the Rays could also look to add another
reliever to their bullpen. Topkin says this would be especially likely if
Roberto Hernandez beats out Jeff Niemann and Alex Cobb for a spot in Tampa Bay’s
rotation.
If the Rays decide not to acquire someone from outside the
organization to add to their bullpen, they would have Brandon Gomes, Josh
Lueke, Dane De La Rosa and Jamey Wright as in-house candidates.
