The Tampa Bay Rays could continue to be in the market for
another bat, and they are expected to target either a designated hitter or
outfielder, according to Marc Topkin of The Tampa Bay Times.
The DH spot is wide open, and a free agent seems likely, though the money, of course, will be a factor as the payroll is already in the $55 million range (plus incentives) and thus unlikely to go much higher.
Topkin lists former Rays sluggers Luke Scott and Delmon
Young as “interesting options” for the club. Scott was somewhat productive in
his first season with the Rays, posting an OPS of .724 with 14 home runs and 55
RBIs over 96 games for the club last year. Young, meanwhile, is still only 27
years old, but he’s struggled on and off the field in recent years.
Beyond Scott and Young, Topkin lists other candidates such
as Dan Johnson, Aubrey Huff, Jim Thome, Carlos Lee, Travis Hafner and Juan
Rivera.
