While the Philadelphia Phillies could be done making moves for the winter, there continue to be reports of their interest in adding a
right-handed-hitting outfielder to their mix of in-house candidates. The
Phillies continue to “look at all options,” including Chicago Cubs’ Alfonso
Soriano, Los Angeles Angels’ Vernon Wells and free agent Scott Hairston, according
to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
Most of the heavy lifting is done, but the Phils continue to look for a right-handed hitting outfielder.
The Phillies are currently set to enter the spring with a
lot of unknowns suiting up for their corner outfield positions. Rosenthal notes
that manager Charlie Manuel likes Darin Ruf, and the team has discussed going
with platoons in both left and right, incorporating Domonic Brown, John
Mayberry Jr. and possibly Laynce Nix.
Soriano and Wells don’t figure to cost a lot prospect-wise,
but they do still sport hefty contracts. Chicago and LA would likely eat at
least a portion of the deals to facilitate a trade, but this leaves room for
discussion.
Hairston, on the other hand, can be had via the free agent
market. Rosenthal notes that the former New York Mets outfielder is seeking $8
million over two years, and the price might be “too steep” for the Phillies.
