The Orioles and Nationals could potentially match up for a
trade that would send slugger Mike Morse from Washington to Baltimore in
exchange for a package built around a left-handed reliever, reports Dan Kolko
of MASN Sports.
The Orioles strike me as one team that could be a good match, given their need for a middle-of-the-order bat and Morse's ability to play left field, first base or DH. Baltimore's roster is stocked with left-handed relief types (Brian Matusz, Troy Patton and Rule 5 pick T.J. McFarland are currently on the 40-man), giving Rizzo and Orioles executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette some options in negotiations.
Morse would become expendable if the Nationals are able to
re-sign first baseman Adam LaRoche. Washington would then be able to shop the
first baseman/outfielder to help fill other areas of need, most noticeably
left-handed relief help.
The Orioles have several lefties in the bullpen, while they
also have been targeting an impact bat this winter. For this reason, Kolko
believes Baltimore and Washington could match up if LaRoche re-signs with the
Nationals and they fail to add a left-handed reliever via free agency.
