The most inevitable trade of the offseason has finally happened. Michael Morse has been traded by the Washington Nationals to the Seattle Mariners as part of a three-team deal. Morse has long been expected to be traded after the Nationals re-signed Adam LaRoche.
According to Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post, the three-way deal sends Morse to the Mariners, the Oakland Athletics got John Jaso from Seattle, and the Nationals received A.J. Cole, Blake Treinen, and a player to be named later. Cole was once in the Nationals organization, but he was traded to Oakland in order for Washington to land Gio Gonzalez.
Morse has proven himself to be a productive everyday Major Leaguer. He was injured in the early parts of the 2012 season and limited to just 102 games. Even so, in that time, Morse hit .291/.321/.470 with 18 home runs.
The Nationals are getting one of the more coveted pitching prospects from the A's organization back. Cole was rated as the 57th best prospect in baseball prior to the 2012 season. This year's rankings have yet to come out, but Cole started 27 games last season between Low-A and High-A and posted a 3.70 ERA.
Jaso will help the A's reinforce their catcher position. The lost Kurt Suzuki to a trade to the Nationals last season, so they wanted to upgrade this offseason. Jaso is a career .255/.359/.395 hitter in his career.
