Nationals Rumors: Washington Scouting Javier Vazquez

The Washington Nationals expressed interest in free agent right-hander Javier Vazquez earlier this offseason, and Ken Rosenthal has now reported that general manager Mike Rizzo was in Puerto Rico last night watching the veteran pitch.

Vazquez stepped away from the game of baseball last season following his impressive campaign with the Marlins in 2011. He maintained an ERA and WHIP of 3.69 and 1.183 over 32 starts spanning 192 2/3 innings.

While Vazquez was out of baseball last season, he never formally retired. Many thought this was his way of leaving the door open on a possible comeback in the future.

Beyond the Nationals, the Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox were also in attendance to watch Vazquez pitch. More than 15 teams have contacted Vazquez and expressed interest in him if he decides to make a comeback this spring. I he does decide to return to MLB, it will be with a contender. Vazquez is expected to make his decision following the World Baseball Classic.
