Marlins Have Talked to Padres About a Deal Involving Giancarlo Stanton

For a team not interested in trading Giancarlo Stanton, the Miami Marlins sure have had plenty of discussion about possible deals for the young outfielder.  Most recently, the San Diego Padres and the Marlins have discussed a possible trade.

According to Bill Center of the San Diego Union Tribune, the Marlins reached out to the Padres about a deal.  The Marlins would likely be looking for young, cost controlled players.  That means they would look to raid the Padres' farm system if a deal were to be done.  Players like Jedd Gyorko and Austin Hedges could be possibilities in any deal for Stanton, says Center.

"The price would be steep. But the Marlins earlier asked the Padres about the availability of infielder Gyorko. It would take at least Gyroko and two other prospects the Marlins could control for six seasons – possibly either Liriano or Hedges plus a pitcher."
Stanton is not eligible for arbitration until the 2014 season and won't be a free agent until 2016.   That means San Diego could pull off a trade and have time to work out a team-friendly long-term contract for Stanton.  That would be the only way a deal would make sense for the small-market Padres.

Stanton suffered knee soreness that was eventually diagnosed as loose bodies that would need to be cleaned up.  He underwent arthroscopic surgery in July and missed the All-Star Game.  He also missed 28 games as a result of the injury.

The knee surgery did not derail Stanton's offensive dominance, though.  He finished the year with a .290/.361/.608 line and 37 home runs.  He led the National League in slugging percentage.  And keep in mind, he played half his games in the larger, less hitter-friendly new Marlins Stadium.

  1. TRADE HIM FOR A WHOLE BUNCH OF YOUNG PLAYERS, STANTON STRIKES OUT A LOT AND HE WILL BE LOST TO A WEST COAST TEAM SOONER OR LATER.

    1. I actually agree and I'm a Padres fan. I wouldn't care about the strikeouts and San Diego could rebuild their farm system quickly.

  2. Stanton is a guy who can carry a team for a week at a time. There are a few, but not many players with that ability. EVERY team should be interested in him. It is doubtful that many of their prospects have more upside than Giancarlo!!!!

    1. I'm of the opinion that San Diego has exactly what the Marlins would want in a trade for Stanton...a ton of prospects they can part with. I don't think any other team is in that position.
