Mariners Rumors: Seattle Targeting Pitchers

While the Seattle Mariners have made it clear that they badly want to add offense this winter, the team is also “looking at starting pitchers,” according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. However, two of the top remaining free agent candidates, Kyle Lohse and Joe Saunders, don’t appear to be fits for the Mariners.

Rosenthal notes that Lohse is “too pricey” for Seattle. The veteran right-hander is coming off an impressive season with the St. Louis Cardinals. Entering the offseason, some estimated he could receive a significant payday on a multi-year deal, but his market has yet to develop.

Saunders has been one of the more consistent starting pitchers in the majors over the past few seasons. His stock increased last year after he showed an ability to hold his own in the American League East with the Baltimore Orioles. Seattle doesn’t appear to be willing to commit three guaranteed years to Saunders, the term the left-hander is seeking.
