Mariners Rumors: Seattle Seeking Starter, Catcher

The spring is right around the corner, but the Seattle Mariners still have some work to do, as the club is currently eyeing a veteran starting pitcher along with a catcher or two, according to Larry Stone of The Seattle Times and Greg Johns of MLB.com.

Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik told reporters that the door is “wide open” for a young pitcher to make his starting rotation, but he would still like to add a veteran arm to the mix. This could be Joe Saunders, as Jon Heyman reported yesterday that the Mariners are among the teams interested in the left-hander.

Seattle acquired catcher Jesus Montero from the New York Yankees last offseason in exchange for Michael Pineda. While the 23-year-old came up as a backstop, he made more starts as the Mariners’ designated hitter last season. For this reason the team is hoping to add another catcher or two in order to find someone to pair with Montero.
