Roy Oswalt was supposed to come in and be the second-half savior for the Texas Rangers last season. Well, maybe not savior, but he was supposed to help them. He didn't do much in the way of helping the team though, suffered through some minor injuries, and ultimately posted a career-high ERA. Now, teams are losing interest in the free agent.
Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe gave his thoughts on the 35-year old righty. Cafardo says many teams have given up on Oswalt because he has shown a lack of commitment to pitching in 2013. Oswalt came back for the Rangers toward the middle of last season, and he may be interested in doing the same for the next team he pitches for - if there is a next team, that is.
Oswalt was not an effective starting pitcher last season, and the Rangers moved him to the bullpen for part of the season. In total, Oswalt went 4-3 with a 5.80 ERA. He made nine starts and made eight relief appearances.
If Oswalt is to pitch again in his career, he is going to have to show some dedication to coming back. After last season, teams are not going to be looking at him come July. He is going to need to start the season with a team, workout with the team, and prove he wants to pitch. Roger Clemens was able to get away with starting a season at the mid-way point, but that was Roger Clemens. This is Roy Oswalt. Big difference.
