The Los Angeles Dodgers have signed left-handed reliever
J.P. Howell to a one-year contract worth $2.85 million, as reported by Buster
Olney of ESPN. Jon Heyman of CBS Sports added that Howell’s new deal gives him
the potential to earn another $1.2 million in performance bonuses in 2013.

Howell will take place of southpaw Randy Choate, who signed
with the St. Louis Cardinals earlier this offseason. He will join Brandon
League, Kenley Jansen and others in the back end of Los Angeles’ bullpen.
Last season with the Tampa Bay Rays, Howell posted an ERA
and WHIP of 3.04 and 1.212 with 7.5 strikeouts and 3.9 walks per nine innings.
The 29-year-old owns a career ERA and WHIP of 4.42 and 1.385 over seven seasons
at the major league level.
