Justin Upton Rumors: Cubs, Diamondbacks Discussed Outfielder

The Cubs and Diamondbacks recently discussed “the feasibility” of a trade that would have sent outfielder Justin Upton from Arizona to Chicago in exchange for prospects, according to Bruce Levine of ESPN Chicago.

The Chicago Cubs and the Arizona Diamondbacks recently discussed the feasibility of a trade that would have sent right fielder Justin Upton to the Cubs, according to two major league sources.

According to Levine’s sources, the Diamondbacks asked the Cubs for shortstop Starlin Castro in exchange for Upton. Not surprisingly, Chicago had no interest in trading their talented 22-year-old shortstop for a 25-year-old right fielder.

The Cubs have been active on several high-profile players this offseason, including right-hander Anibal Sanchez before he re-signed with the Detroit Tigers. They have already added right-hander Edwin Jackson on a multi-year deal.

Arizona continues to say it will entertain offers for Upton, but the club isn’t willing to simply give away the right fielder. Still, considering they had a deal in place which Upton vetoed, it would appear the slugger will be on the move before the winter’s through.
