The club has had significant conversations with right-hander Brandon Lyon, CSN Bay Area has confirmed.
Baggarly adds that discussions had been tabled for a week as the team focused its attention on its arbitration eligible players. However, San Francisco has “aggressively pursued” Lyon.
The Giants have reportedly left the door open to a possible reunion with former closer Brian Wilson, but Baggarly notes that if the team adds Lyon it would likely be their final move of the offseason.
Lyon has been a late-inning reliever throughout much of his career, and he held the role of primary closer for the Houston Astros during the 2010 season. Lyon has 79 career saves and has maintained an ERA of 4.12 over 11 seasons at the major league level.
Beyond potential acquisitions, in-house arm Sergio Romo figures to also get a crack at handling closing duties this spring. The right-hander collected 14 saves while maintaining an ERA of 1.79 over 69 appearances for the Giants last season.
