When the Pittsburgh Pirates began working on their multi-year deal for Francisco Liriano, they had no idea he was injured. The injury to Liriano's arm was revealed during a physical, the contract was put on hold, and eventually the two sides worked out a deal that protects the Pirates. Now, we may know what happened to Liriano's arm.
Liriano's arm injury may have been the result of a fracture he suffered in the Dominican Republic over the winter. According to Tom Singer of MLB.com, there are news reports out of the DR that Liriano broke his arm in a fall in his bathroom. A newspaper in the DR, elcaribe.com, says the fall happened only days after he agreed to the two-year contract with the Pirates.
The Pirates have cited HIPPA privacy laws that bar the release of a patient's medical information when asked about the extent and diagnosis of Liriano's injury. Liriano has not confirmed the report about the broken arm, but considering the concern the Pirates showed, it is very possible. Fortunately, the injury was to Liriano's non-throwing arm.
Liriano pitched for the Minnesota Twins for most of his career. He was traded to the Chicago White Sox last season. Overall, Liriano has pitched in seven Major League seasons and posted a 4.40 ERA. He has a 53-54 record in that time.
