Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers told
reporters, including Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, that he is not going to accept
less of a trade package for outfielder Justin Upton after the young slugger
rejected a trade from the Seattle Mariners. Towers added that he’s in “no hurry”
to trade Upton.
"I'm not taking less," Towers said here in a brief interview at the Scouts Foundation dinner. "I'm in no hurry."
The Diamondbacks and Mariners had agreed to a trade last
week that would have sent Upton to Seattle in exchange for Taijuan Walker, Nick
Franklin, Stephen Pryor and Charlie Furbush. However, Upton used his limited
no-trade clause to block the deal.
Now, Towers is saying that the Mariners’ deal should be
viewed as a baseline, not a ceiling, for future trades. Most around the game
considered Seattle’s proposal to be a steep overpay for Upton.
Beyond the Mariners, Upton has been tied to the Texas
Rangers, Tampa Bay Rays, Atlanta Braves, New York Mets and Baltimore Orioles.
