Derek Jeter Takes First Workout at Yankees Complex

He came out of the Yankee clubhouse wearing team insignia shorts and a long sleeve tee shirt.  He walked to the main practice field without a limp.  Yankee shortstop and Captain Derek Jeter was back on the field.

Jeter broke his left ankle in Game 1 of the ALCS versus the Tigers, effectively ending both his and the Yankees' seasons.  The 13-time All-Star had surgery in late October, expecting a four to five month recovery period. Jeter has been walking on an underwater treadmill at the team's facility since early January. 
Under the watch of Yankee trainer Mark Littlefield and several other team officials, the Hall of Fame lock took 55 grounders on the grass in front of the infield dirt at shortstop. While he also took swings in the batting cage, he did not run and will not until sometime during spring camp, which starts next month.

Still hoping to be ready and in the Yankees Opening Day lineup (April 1 vs. Boston), Derek was quoted by the Associated Press after yesterdays workout.  "Everything went well," Jeter said as he drove out of the complex.

Anthony McCarron of the NY Daily News discussed Jeters' workout with Yankee GM Brian Cashman. “He’s fine, he’s healthy and it’s now about knocking the rust off in a systematic way,” Cashman stated in a telephone interview. “It’s the next step in the process. There’s no worries or concerns with him; he’s just closing the gap between now and opening day,

This writer has previously posted doubts whether Jeter will ever be an everyday shortstop again, based on his age combined with this injury.  Mondays' progress has to be great encouragement to Yankee faithful that Jeter will prove this hack wrong.
