The Baltimore Orioles are not necessarily done this offseason. If the right deal came around, the Orioles could pull the trigger on a blockbuster. Whether the latest rumors surrounding the team amounts to a blockbuster or not is up for interpretation, but the Orioles are discussing a possible three-team trade.
Roch Kubatko of MASN says he was told on Monday that the trade rumors surrounding Rick Porcello involving the Detroit Tigers and Chicago Cubs could also involve the Orioles. Baltimore has interest in Porcello and the Tigers have interest in J.J. Hardy. Kubatko says the Tigers are getting the Orioles involved in the discussion for this reason. The Cubs, though, want Porcello. That means they would have to give the Orioles some nice pitching prospects to get this deal done says Kubatko.
Hardy has been a mainstay in Baltimore and it would be difficult to see the team parting with him. However, another solid starting pitcher could help keep the Orioles in the playoff picture while playing in a much-improved AL East in 2013. Hardy has been relatively healthy over the past few years. Earlier in his career, he was getting the label of "injury-prone," but he has played 129 games and 158 games in each of the last two seasons respectively.
Porcello is young enough to have a huge upside. He has yet to have a breakout season, but at 24 years old, it's easy to envision him putting things together and becoming a solid pitcher. So far in his career, Porcello has a 4.55 ERA in 120 career starts. Porcello has not offered up any injury concerns thus far for Detroit. He has started 31 games in three out of four of his Major League seasons.
