Braves Open to Re-Signing Michael Bourn

Michael Bourn was, and still is, one of the hottest free agents on the market.  He was expected to draw a lot of attention, and he has.  However, it is January and Bourn still does not have a contract.  Now, it seems the Atlanta Braves may be interested in bringing him back.

Atlanta has never closed the door on re-signing Bourn says GM Frank Wren.  According to Jim Bowden of ESPN and Sirius Radio, Bourn could play either left field or center if he were to return to Atlanta.

Michael Bourn performed well in his time with the Braves.  He provided durability and stability, something that will surely drive his price up.   Bourn saw more plate appearances than either of the Braves' other two regular outfielder, Jason Heyward and Martin Prado.  Bourn is also expected to be expensive for any team signing him.

Considering B.J. Upton signed a five-year, $75.25 million deal with the Braves back in November, re-signing Bourn will be costly.  Bourn was worth 6.0 WAR last season and has 19.0 WAR in his seven-year career.  Upton, on the other hand, was worth just 2.6 WAR and has totaled 13.6 WAR in his eight-year career.  The bottom line?  Bourn will cost the Braves a lot more than Upton.

Should Atlanta re-sign Bourn, their outfield will be stacked.  They will have Heyward, Upton, and Bourn to go along with an impressive infield and solid pitching.  If the Braves can make it happen, look for them to make a legitimate run at the division crown next year.
