While the Los Angeles Dodgers are reportedly the favorite to
sign right-hander Zack Greinke, and the Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angels have
also been tied to the free agent, the Washington Nationals could pose the “biggest
threat” to the Dodgers in the sweepstakes or the market’s top starter, reports
Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com.
The Dodgers are the assumed favorites for top free-agent pitcher Zack Greinke for obvious reasons (read as: the green stuff). But if one team is looking like perhaps the biggest threat to the Dodgers it may be the Nationals.
Heyman notes that the acquisition of center fielder Denard
Span saved the Nationals millions as they won’t have to shell out a free agent
contract for Michael Bourn or B.J. Upton.
The Nationals could take this money not invested into center
field and use it elsewhere, including upgrading their already potent starting
rotation. One rival GM Heyman spoke to speculated that Washington could decide
to be in “at all costs” when it came to Greinke if they decided to target him.
