Yankees Rumors: NY Won’t Add Catcher

The New York Yankees did not make an offer to veteran catcher A.J. Pierzynski before he signed with the Texas Rangers last night, and the team is currently planning on going with three in-house options behind the plate, Francisco Cervelli, Chris Stewart and Austin Romine, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

The Yankees entered the offseason as the favorite to re-sign catcher Russell Martin. Since being acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers, Martin had been the Yankees regular behind the plate.

However, Martin bolted for Pittsburgh as the Pirates reportedly offered the veteran a better deal than the Yankees. Left with few options remaining on the free agent market and limited financial flexibility, New York has opted to remain in-house to fill its vacant catcher position.

Cervelli and Stewart have been backups in the majors before and while Romine was once a top prospect, he’s dealt with injuries in recent years.
