Last week it was reported that free agent outfielder Ichiro
Suzuki enjoyed his time with the New York Yankees so much that he was willing to wait for an offer from the club before making a decision on where to sign
this offseason. Now, according to Suzuki’s agent, the player and his
representation “don’t care what the Yankees do,” reports George A. King III of
The New York Post.
"At the beginning we talked a lot but since that time, zero,’’ agent Tony Attanasio said of discussions with the Yankees. “As far as we are concerned we don’t care what the Yankees do. We have had conversations with multiple clubs. If we see something we like he will go through with it."
The Yankees have spent the first part of their offseason
focusing on pitching, specifically re-signing their veteran arms. The club has
since checked several to-do’s off its list, including agreements with Andy
Pettitte, Hiroki Kuroda and Mariano Rivera. Now New York is expected to shift
its attention to position players.
Outfield is one of the Yankees’ areas of need, as Suzuki and
fellow free agent Nick Swisher are no longer under contract. Last season Ichiro
hit .322/.340/.454 with 13 doubles and five home runs over 227 at-bats after
being traded to New York.
