At first glance, the Philadelphia Phillies may have got the better end of this deal. Yesterday, the Minnesota Twins and the Phillies agreed to a deal to send Ben Revere to Philadelphia for Vance Worley and Trevor May. Worley is coming off an elbow injury and Trevor May is still proving himself in the minors.
Mandy Housenick of the Allentown Morning Call suggests Revere could be the center fielder of the future for the Phillies, only he's ready right now. She points out that manager Charlie Manuel had been calling for a center fielder for a while now, and the Phillies got a good one in Revere. They sent an injured Worley to Minnesota, so the deal could work out great for Philadelphia.
Worley battled an elbow injury toward the end of last season, had to be shut down, and underwent surgery. It was not Tommy John surgery which is good, but it was still elbow surgery. He says he's ahead of schedule and should be ready for the start of 2013, but with elbow injuries, the effectiveness of the pitcher upon return is the mystery. Worely was 6-9 with a 4.20 ERA last season. He has a career 3.50 ERA.
Revere is just 24 years old and just completed his full season in the Majors. He has already shown a high level of talent. Last season, Revere hit .294/.333/.342. He stole 40 bases as well. He's a threat at the plate and on the base paths. And he's cost controlled. Revere does not even hit arbitration eligibility until the 2014 season. He won't be a free agent until the 2018 season.
The deal seems to favor the Phillies, but until the 2013 season plays out, we won't know for sure. Worley will have to test his elbow, Trevor May will have to work his way to the bigs, and Revere will have to adjust to life under the spot light that is Philadelphia.
