Scott Rolen seemed to have one foot out the door by the end of the 2012 season. Injuries had limited him to the point of considering retirement. Despite the potential that Rolen my retire, the Cincinnati Reds kept an open line of communication. That may have paid off as Rolen is considering a return for the 2013 season.
According to Danny Knobler of CBS Sports, Rolen may want to go to spring training with the Reds and see if he can play another year. Knobler says the Reds are happy to let him do so. His leadership is something the team would like to continue to have around.
Rolen played in just 92 games last season. He has dealt with a variety of injuries, most notably to his shoulder. The consensus seems to be that Rolen's injuries prevented him from reaching his full potential. But he made the most of his career and could still help the Reds in some capacity.
Rolen hit .245/.318/.399. However, he was an All-Star in 2011 and is a seven-time All-Star overall in his career. Rolen won the Rookie of the Year award in 1997 and has hit .281/.364/.490 in his career. He may not have lived up to his potential because of injury setbacks, but he should have no regrets. His career has been one that most players can only dream of.
